Sun Peaks is the mountain resort community northeast of Kamloops, with condos, townhomes, chalets and cabins, many of them owned part-time or rented out. If you're planning a renovation, an older unit or cabin may need asbestos testing first. We connect Sun Peaks owners, strata councils and property managers with specialists who serve the resort.
Is asbestos likely in my building?
The date matters. WorkSafeBC says asbestos was used in building materials from the 1950s to the 1990s, and that a home built before 1990 is likely to contain it somewhere. Many buildings at Sun Peaks are newer than that, but not all of them, and WorkSafeBC notes that newer buildings can contain asbestos if older materials were used. If you don't know when your building or its finishes date from, ask a qualified surveyor before you renovate.
Strata, rental and part-time owners
- Know who's responsible. Work inside your unit is usually yours to arrange. Common property usually goes through the strata council or property manager. Check your bylaws before booking anything.
- Plan around occupancy. If the unit is rented out, schedule testing and any abatement between bookings, and ask the contractor whether any part of the unit will be off limits during the work.
- Keep the paperwork. Keep the survey report and the contractor's closing report with your unit records.
Disposal
The Sun Peaks Transfer Station isn't one of the TNRD sites that accepts asbestos-containing material. The TNRD lists only the Heffley Creek and Lower Nicola Eco-Depots, and pre-1990 material is treated as asbestos-containing unless a hazard assessment with lab results is provided. See the TNRD asbestos page.
Kamloops Asbestos Removal is an independent referral service, not an asbestos contractor. Testing and removal are carried out by independent professionals, and abatement contractors must hold a valid WorkSafeBC Asbestos Abatement Licence. Availability, travel charges and scheduling are set by the contractor.
