Asbestos Testing & Removal in Salmon Arm

Older home, lake cabin or farm building in Salmon Arm or the Shuswap? Get connected with asbestos specialists who serve the area.

Salmon Arm is on the shore of Shuswap Lake, east of Kamloops on the Trans-Canada. Between the town's older neighbourhoods, lake cabins and recreational properties, and farm buildings in the surrounding valleys, there's a lot of pre-1990 construction where asbestos may turn up. We connect Salmon Arm-area property owners with specialists who serve the Shuswap.

Lake cabins and recreational properties

  • Test before the reno season. If you're planning work for when you're at the lake, book the survey ahead so the results and any abatement are sorted before your other trades arrive.
  • Watch for vermiculite. Older cabins can have loose vermiculite in the attic or walls. HealthLink BC advises not disturbing it and not using the attic for storage until it's been assessed.
  • Don't forget the outbuildings. Boathouses, sheds and garages can have asbestos cement siding or roofing.

Salmon Arm's disposal rules are different

Salmon Arm is in the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD), not the TNRD, so different landfill rules apply. Under the CSRD's disposal guidelines:

  • Waste installed after December 31, 1989 needs a signed Asbestos Declaration and Acknowledgement Form.
  • Pre-1990 waste, or waste of unknown age, is treated as material that may contain asbestos. It must be double-bagged in sealed plastic bags at least 6 mil thick, or contained in a bin liner or sealed 6-mil poly. Bagged loads are accepted at CSRD transfer stations and landfills.
  • Pre-1990 waste is treated as asbestos-free only with the declaration form and a hazard assessment from a qualified professional.
  • Loose, unbagged pre-1990 loads are accepted at CSRD landfills only. Customers who bring them are flagged and will be turned away next time.

If you hire a licensed abatement contractor, they'll normally handle disposal of the asbestos itself. These rules matter most for the rest of your renovation debris, which is one more reason to get a survey first.

Kamloops Asbestos Removal is an independent referral service, not an asbestos contractor. Testing and removal are carried out by independent professionals, and abatement contractors must hold a valid WorkSafeBC Asbestos Abatement Licence. Availability, travel charges and scheduling are set by the contractor.

Salmon Arm asbestos FAQ

Isn't Salmon Arm outside the Kamloops area?
It's in the Shuswap and the Columbia Shuswap Regional District, but several asbestos abatement and restoration companies, including some from Kamloops, list Salmon Arm in their service areas, and there are local companies too. We'll pass your request to someone who serves Salmon Arm.
What does the CSRD need to accept older renovation waste?
The CSRD treats pre-1990 renovation and demolition waste, or waste of unknown age, as material that may contain asbestos. It must be double-bagged in sealed 6-mil plastic bags, a lined bin or sealed 6-mil poly. It's only treated as asbestos-free if it comes with the CSRD's Asbestos Declaration and Acknowledgement Form, including a hazard assessment from a qualified professional.
I own a lake cabin. When should I test?
Before any work that will disturb older materials, such as replacing flooring, opening walls or ceilings, or upgrading the attic. If the cabin was built before 1990, WorkSafeBC says it's likely to contain asbestos somewhere.
